Pedestrian Safety in Ward 5 and Northeast Calgary

Keeping pedestrians safe in Ward 5 is a shared responsibility. Whether you are driving, walking, or using an e-scooter, understanding the rules and being aware of your surroundings helps reduce the risk of collisions and injuries.

Pedestrian Safety in Ward 5

For Drivers

Drivers must stop for pedestrians at both marked and unmarked crosswalks and intersections. It is important to stay alert at all times, particularly at corners, intersections, and in playground zones where foot traffic is high. Passing another vehicle at a crosswalk is prohibited, as it may block your view of a pedestrian crossing. When parking, leave at least five metres (approximately one car length) from crosswalks, intersections, and stop signs. Drivers should also use caution when turning and check carefully for pedestrians before proceeding.

For Pedestrians

Pedestrians are encouraged to cross the street at corners and designated intersections wherever possible. Making eye contact with drivers helps ensure they have seen you before stepping into the roadway. Remaining attentive is critical — distractions such as texting or using a phone while crossing can increase the risk of an incident. Pedestrians should also avoid crossing between parked vehicles or outside designated crossing areas.

For E‑Scooter Riders

E‑scooters are becoming more common on Calgary pathways, and riders must follow specific safety rules. E‑scooters are not permitted on sidewalks and should only be used where allowed, such as shared pathways. Riders must obey posted speed limits, including the 20 km/h limit on pathways. Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of injury.

Riders should remain alert for pedestrians at all times and yield to them when passing. Safe and courteous riding is essential, as reckless behaviour can lead to enforcement and fines under local bylaws.

A Shared Responsibility

Everyone has a role to play in keeping Ward 5 safe. By following the rules, staying alert, and looking out for one another, we can help ensure that all residents are able to travel safely in their community.
