About Raj
Raj Dhaliwal is the City Councillor for Ward 5, representing one of Calgary's fastest growing and most diverse communities. Raised in northeast Calgary, Raj understands the realities facing local families, newcomers, youth, and small businesses because this is the community that helped shape him. Ward 5 and northeast Calgary are full of energy, opportunity, and potential, and Raj is deeply committed to ensuring that growth is matched with real, equitable investment. His focus is on delivering safe roads, reliable transit, strong community spaces, and neighbourhoods where families can thrive, not just today, but for generations to come.
With an engineering degree from the University of Calgary and professional experience as an oil and gas engineer at Suncor, Raj brings a practical, solutions focused approach to public service. He understands how to manage complex projects, balance priorities, and plan for long term growth, skills that directly inform his work at City Hall. Whether reviewing infrastructure investments or advocating for new community facilities, Raj applies a results oriented mindset rooted in careful analysis and accountability.
Since being elected, Raj has delivered tangible progress across Ward 5 and northeast Calgary. He has been a strong advocate for major road and infrastructure projects such as improvements to Country Hills Boulevard and the North East Athletic Complex, supported transit expansion in growing communities, and worked to strengthen community safety through close coordination with Calgary Police Service and City partners. He consistently pushes to ensure Ward 5 and northeast Calgary receive the funding, attention, and follow through they deserve.
Known for being present and accessible, Raj believes leadership starts with listening. He regularly meets with residents, community groups, and local organizations, follows through on concerns raised, and brings people together to get things done.
